On January 6, 1946, H. Randall Herrington and Emily Lou Shoemaker were married. Randy and Emily had three children and resided in West Terre Haute. Emily was an administrative assistant in the office of Financial Aid at Indiana State University. Emily had a love for nature, her community, and her dedication for recycling and conservation. Emily had a special place in her heart for the Wabashiki Trail as her husband, Randy, helped to build and maintain the levee as a member of the West Vigo Levee Association. She worked with the Audubon Society in hopes to inspire people to continue the beautification of the trail. After her passing, her children set up a walk called “Emily’s Walk,” in her memory and to follow her example of community service and leaving a legacy. The Herrington Family Fund is to provide support to for programs or activities benefitting residents of Vigo County. Contributions made from Emily’s Walk are put toward the fund.

Emily and Randy were very active in West Terre Haute. Emily was known as, “the great woman behind the great man,” because she was always in support of Randy’s community endeavors. Both of them belonged to a plethora of clubs and organizations for the benefit of the community. Their three children, Randa, Chris, and Cathy, created the Randy & Emily Herrington Community Service Award Scholarship to create a lasting memorial to their parents.

“We are so very proud of our parents’ service and commitment of time and energy to the improvement of the town of West Terre Haute and the greater West Vigo Area. We felt this [scholarship fund] would be a fitting tribute to their memories,” said Chris Herrington.

This scholarship fund recognizes the community involvement, commitment and perseverance that was demonstrated by Randy and Emily. This scholarship is awarded to a current graduating senior of West Vigo High School, who is involved in community service.

“Our family wanted to support a young person who demonstrates his or her commitment to the West Terre Haute and West Vigo community just as our parents did,” said Cathy Schwab.
