Donald McMahan

Donald Willis McMahan was born in Sullivan on June 10, 1939, to Walter and Maud Farrand McMahan. He was married on July 22, 1967, to Martha Jean Smith. Don was a graduate of the 1957 class at Sullivan High School. Following high school, he joined the Carpenter’s Local 133 and was a proud union member for 67 years. In addition to working through the union, Donald also did carpentry jobs in homes throughout Sullivan and the surrounding communities. These jobs were most often as much a social call as they were for employment.

Donald took watercolor painting classes later in life and spent many years in his “art loft” at home and was a member of the Sullivan County Art Guild. He was a former Jaycee and was a member of the Sullivan Elks Lodge 911. Donald was a longtime member of the Sullivan Board of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Donald was also a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church, where he had been a deacon and 2nd grade Sunday School teacher. He taught enough years to see several children of his earlier students attend his classes as well. He loved teaching the children about the Bible and Jesus and took great pride in the fact that he had read the Bible 19 times, cover to cover.
