Harriet Ellen Hicks was born on January 18, 1921 to Harvey and Ethel Hicks. She grew up and graduated from Brazil High School in 1939. She went on to graduate from Indiana State University, formerly known as Indiana State Teachers College, in 1943. Once graduated, Harriet taught at Beech Grove High School for two years before moving on to Brazil High School and Northview High School where she taught for 44 years before retiring in 1989.
After her retirement, Harriet could still be found at Northview High School. She spent the next 11 years there as a librarian. When she wasn’t working, she often spent her time at the Northview sporting events cheering on the home team. Many remember Harriet as someone who had a love for helping others, being involved and giving back to her community. She loved gardening, reading, studying genealogy, attending sporting events, and her pets.
Not only was she actively involved with school activities, but she still managed to find time to be a part of many organizations including Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the American Revolution, Jackson Township Home Economics Club, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and the Ladies Literacy Society.
Harriet passed away on July 24, 2007 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital at the age of 86. Even though her physical presence may be absent, her memory will live on as someone who was thoughtful, caring and compassionate about her community. The Harriet Hicks Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in her name with the Clay County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, in order to provide a scholarship(s) to a student from Northview High School in Clay County who has the intention of pursuing a higher education.
Eligibility requires that:
- You are a graduate of Northview High School.
- You intend to pursue a degree in education at an Indiana college or university.
