Avice McCrae first came to Terre Haute in 1920. She became involved with the Chauncey Rose Board in 1925 because her husband, Henry W. Conrad, served on it. The Chauncey Rose Board was responsible for operating the Chauncey Rose Home, which served elderly men and women.

Avice started with taking minutes. In the 1930s, Mrs. McCrae was the first woman elected to that board.

In 1971, Avice became involved with the Clara Fairbanks Foundation when the Chauncey Rose Board and the Clara Fairbanks Board merged.  She later served as the director of the Clara Fairbanks Foundation.

In honor of Mrs. McCrae’s 90th birthday, the Clara Fairbanks Foundation established the Avice McCrae Scholarship Fund in the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. The purpose is to provide a scholarship for a Vigo County student attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
